Driving time regulations at a glance
Scheduling fleet trips poses the challenge of keeping business operations in steady motion whilst staying compliant with regulated break times. To avoid sanctions, fleet managers need to keep up to date with all EU driving hours rules specified in Regulation (EC) No 561/2006. You can see the key rules below.
- Daily driving time limit: maximum 9 hours per day.
- Maximum continuous driving time: 4.5 hours. (After this, drivers must take a 45-minute break.)
- Daily rest requirement: minimum 11 consecutive hours.
When to use a driving hours calculator?
Driving hours calculators help you maintain fleet efficiency whilst staying compliant. They are an essential tool for reassigning tasks last-minute due to driver shortages or unexpected incidents.
Let’s put the driving hours calculator to use in an example scenario.
You are a fleet manager and you’re helping a new driver map out routes for the week. He has a busy schedule coming up, with tasks filling his next five days.
You need to check whether an ambitious delivery schedule is achievable whilst respecting driving time regulations.
- You input the estimated driving times for the five days into the driving time calculator.
- You check the total shown instantly.
- 58 hours. Uh oh. The cell turns red, signaling that the total is over the weekly driving limit of 56 hours.
- To bring down the total, you resolve to reassign one task to a different available driver. You update the hours in the calculator accordingly. The red disappears.
- You notice that Wednesday’s value is highlighted in amber and check the key to see if this is critical. It’s okay—the calculator is warning you that the daily driving time is above nine hours, but this is acceptable if limited to twice a week.
- All set! Your new driver is ready for a productive, fully compliant week of work.

How does the driving time calculator work?
0The driving hours calculator is quick and easy to use.
Simply plug in driving hours and rest times to check daily, weekly and consecutive week totals comply with regulation.
Values showing in green are safe and compliant.
Values showing in amber require a double-check of the rules (shown clearly to the side of the calculator). For example, a cell will turn amber when daily hours surpass the recommended nine hours of driving. As can be seen in the control list, action is only required if this limit is exceeded more than twice in one week.
Values showing in red signal regulatory violations. It is important to amend these compliance issues by adapting driver schedules to accommodate their wellbeing and avoid fines.
